Our approach to Generative AI

Innovation is what we do.

We have a long history of engaging with emerging technologies. Generative AI is no different for us.

New technologies, such as generative AI, present exciting opportunities but need to be explored responsibly.

We are engaging with our clients to ensure thoughtful implementation of generative AI and we are educating our people on the benefits and risks associated with it. This technological evolution is bringing in a new wave of complex challenges for companies, an increased regulatory environment, and new opportunities which our market leading Technology sector is advising on.

A pioneering history of creating and adopting new technologies...

now focused on finding ways to make GenAI enhance our service offering.

Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been working on across the firm:

Finding use-cases

The best ideas always come from our people. As part of our strategy to encourage our people to familiarise themselves with the technology and test different uses of GenAI for themselves, we have been running a series of global ideas campaigns. These campaigns gather ideas from across the firm – across seniorities, roles and geographies - on how to apply this technology in day to day tasks. As always, there was no shortage of great ideas, and we’re now working our way through implementing those ideas, working with a range of technology partners to do that.

Laila – the Linklaters chatbot

Linklaters has its own GenAI chatbot which enables everyone in the firm to explore how this technology works. Our chatbot has been built using Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service which means that our prompts and responses are kept within a secure environment. The chatbot is evolving as we add new features and try out new use cases.  To help people get the best from this technology we have been delivering training on prompt engineering across the firm.

Upskilling our people

We have been giving our people – and our clients – lots of training on GenAI, from how to explore use cases to prompt engineering training, so that they can get the best out of products they have access to.

Our training includes a foundation series of generative AI online learning modules (part of our digital academy) with advanced training offered to those who want to understand how AI technology can be adopted in a law firm. We are also working with a world-leading law school to deliver intensive training to a small cohort of employees on how to design and deliver AI solutions.

Copilot

Following Linklaters participation in the Early Adopters Programme, Linklaters has onboarded Microsoft Copilot, an AI tool integrated into Microsoft 365. Copilot is an AI assistant tool that supports productivity across the suite of Microsoft 365 tools including Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Investing in roles

We have been recruiting a diverse AI delivery team with experience from across law, data and technology to ensure that we build a credible ecosystem for our adoption of AI.

Governance and strategy

Our adoption of AI is governed by a partner-led team who scrutinise the adoption of new AI technology and are developing best practice in terms of upskilling our people and working with clients. We intend to adopt AI in accordance with the principles set out in our AI Charter. As AI technologies develop, we will continually assess our use of AI and adapt our processes to ensure that our use of AI continues to benefit our clients and our people and remains consistent with our values.

Linklaters AI Charter

Linklaters wishes to be transparent with clients and the public about how it uses AI. We intend to use AI in accordance with the principles set out in our AI Charter. As AI technologies develop, we will continually assess our use of AI and adapt our processes to ensure that our use of AI continues to benefit our clients and our people and remains consistent with our values.
